I'm On the Sisterlock Site!!

Woooo Hooooo!!I just found out that my name is on the official Sisterlock site!!!  (sorry the pic is so big)

Great Song About Loving Your Hair!

I was on someone's blog (sorry can't remember who) and I watched this video.  Since I am a big kid, and I loved it so much (especially when she has cornrows), I decided to add it to my Blog.  Enjoy!!

Read the story of how this song was made . . . from NPR

A little Muppet girl has started a sensation. The unnamed puppet with an afro sings a love song to her hair.

"I Love My Hair" debuted on the Oct. 4 episode of Sesame Street. It was posted on the show's YouTube page — and then women began posting the video on their Facebook pages.

African-American bloggers wrote that it brought them to tears because of the message it sends to young black girls.
Joey Mazzarino, the head writer of Sesame Street, is also a Muppeteer who wrote the song for his daughter.

Mazzarino is Italian. He and his wife adopted their 5-year-old daughter, Segi, from Ethiopia when she was a year old.
Mazzarino says he wrote the song after noticing his daughter playing with dolls.

"She wanted to have long blond hair and straight hair, and she wanted to be able to bounce it around," he tells NPR's Melissa Block.

Mazzarino says he began to get worried, but he thought it was only a problem that white parents of African-American children have. Then he realized the problem was much larger.

In writing the song, he wanted to say in song what he says to his daughter: "Your hair is great. You can put it in ponytails. You can put it in cornrows. I wish I had hair like you."

That simple message has caused an outpouring of responses from women. Mazzarino got a call from an African woman who told him the song brought her to tears. "I was amazed, 'cause I sort of wrote this little thing for my daughter, and here this adult woman, it touched her," he says.

Mazzarino says he's happy to report that Segi loves the song — and her hair.

Night Out Look

I was looking for something spunky to do with my Sisterlocks.  My Cousin (shout out to Nicole) twisted my hair, which was SO tight.  I forgot about how it felt to have my hair pulled that tight.  Anyway, I loved the style, and here is a variation of how it looked.

Go Natural Without the BIG CHOP!

So many people think that the only way to “Go Natural” is to do the BIG CHOP.  I can speak from personal experience; this is not the only way to go natural.  Sisterlocks are great for transitioning from relaxed hair to locks without the BIG CHOP.  This is why so many fall in love with them!

All you need is 1 ½ - 2 inches of new growth to start your Sisterlocks.

A client wore her relaxer until her new growth was long enough to transition into Sisterlocks.  The relaxed hair can still be styled, and eventually will be cut off leaving her with a beautiful head of Sisterlocks.
Please be sure to research all avenues before you chop it all off.

2nd Install

Today is Monday (6/20/2011), and this past weekend (Saturday & Sunday) I installed my second set of Sisterlocks.  I am so excited to spread Sisterlocks everywhere!!  My client has about 6-8 inches of thick, beautiful natural hair.  The install took a little over 18 hours, and she has a total of 420 Sisterlocks.
I do believe I will start treating myself to a massage the day after an install, because I find places are sore, that I never thought would be, like my shoulders.

I'm So Excited!!

I am so excited!! This weekend I will be installing my second set of Sisterlocks.  My client is excited about being able to exercise without her hair swelling up on her head.  She has about 6 to 7 inches of natural hair, and will probably take ALL weekend, this being my first set with all natural hair, and no relaxer on the ends . . . stay tuned for pictures.

How I Stumbled Upon Sisterlocks

For years, I had been in the normal routine of relaxing my hair, bumping the ends and wrapping it.  I wore every style that was popular at the time, beginning with the Wave Nuevo back in the 80’s.
After loosing a patch of hair immediately after relaxing it around 2006, I decided I was absolutely finished with putting unnecessary chemicals in my hair.  For about four years I grew my hair, and refused to relax it, I clipped a little at the time, until all of the relaxer was out of my hair.  I had NO idea how to style it.  I wore braids, wigs, and would often flat iron my hair just to be able to manage it.  I wanted dreadlocks, and bad!!  The only problem I had was that I did not want to cut off all of my hair, and start from scratch.  I was uneducated and did not know any other option for managing my natural hair.
One day, I met a lady in the parking lot with traditional locks.  After talking with her for over an hour, she told me to check out Sisterlocks.  I went home and Googled them and have been falling in love every since.
About two weeks later, I found a consultant, Altamarie Woods, on the Sisterlock website.  I felt like this was a sign, because she and I went to the same high school!!  She put the sample locks in my and my husband’s head, and about two weeks later, she was installing my husband’s Brotherlocks.  I was right behind him the next weekend getting my Sisterlocks . .  .  and the journey began.
